Are our devices the new Soma?

In the classic 1932 book, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley readers are introduced to a happiness producing drug called Soma. Although this is a fictional story, this hits quite close to home. In the book, the drug is consumed regularly to induce a soothing and happy feeling over people, although the main character Bernard Marx does not get much joy or happiness from the drug.

Are our mobile phones the new Soma? You could argue yes, as research has shown that we get a little dopamine hit every time our phone pings in our pocket. It is this instant gratification that makes our phones so addictive.

So next time your phone makes that familiar noise, just ask yourself, do I need to check it right now?

Food for thought.

Till next time, Stay Stoic,
