Is Overnight Success a thing?
By The Stoic Strength Coach
“An overnight sensation”, “Jeez, they got big all of a sudden”, “They got their break” ….yes, we have heard it all. And before we begin, we must make one thing clear – There is no such thing as an overnight success. In our current world with instant messages and instant gratification, many believe that little to no work has been put in, and it just happens over a couple of hours which, of course, is not the case. In some cases, years of work have been put in behind closed doors, out of the public eye.
In his excellent book Mastery, Robert Greene talks about our ability to access vast amounts of information that professionals in the past could only dream about, but is that to our detriment? Has having access to so much information given us a free ride? Just do a quick google search about anything without putting in the work – Not necessary to become a master in a particular topic or to be able to say an overnight success. One needs to put in years of work for it to pay off.
“No great thing is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig. If you tell me that you desire a fig, I answer that there must be time. Let it first blossom, then bear fruit, then ripen.”Tweet
Everyone wants to be successful in some shape or form, from sports to business, but many do not know what success means and how to get there. Many people see the lovely images and videos online and say, ‘aw, I want that,’ but are unwilling to work for it.
But coming back to the idea of overnight success, why do you want it? For the money? To impress people? Or just to say you have accomplished a particular goal you set out to do – only you can answer that question, but the key is to ask yourself, WHY? It is always important to ask these questions as it gives people clarity and rationale for choosing a particular path and can help build a roadmap.
The key message from this post is that overnight success is not a thing (and yes, this includes all the get-rich-quick schemes you see online) and the importance of not giving up at the first hurdle or when the motivation dies down (which it will!). Consistency is the name of the game and the idea of building on what you have completed already.
I hope this post helps you in your daily life, and please let me know how you overcome this phenomenon of overnight success in the comments!
